OPP Free Flock

OPP is a chronic progressive pneumonia that has been called "The Silent Thief" and has a considerable economic impact on flocks across the United States. It typically results in mastitis, respiratory distress, swollen joints, and thin ewe syndrome in older sheep.  Although, some sheep may be carriers and not show symptoms.

Superior Farms research has shown that OPP free flocks are on average 30% more profitable due to decreased culling and increased performance. This calculation does not include the additional labor and time required to maintain a flock that is infected with OPP.

We are a closed flock that is OPP Free since repopulating with OPP free breeding stock in 2006. Since then, we have sample tested 10% of our ewes each year and in 2021 we did a whole flock recertification and tested 100% OPP free.

We are members of the "OPP Concerned Sheep Breeders Society" which doesn't denote freedom from OPP, but rather an active concern about the effects of this disease within flocks across the US. The society welcomes both purebred and commercial producers, as well as veterinarians, researches, educators and all other who share an interest in ovine health issues.

If you'd like to learn more about membership or OPP in general, please visit the OPP Society website. Feel free to reach out to us with any questions pertaining to our closed flock or OPP free status.
